The Old English Sheepdog is the most recognizable of the dog breeds thanks to one distinctive feature : their fur coat. The old English sheepdogs long, thick, shaggy coat is known for hanging over its face, obscuring their eyes. These dogs have been seen in Hollywood movies as well as on advertisements for Dulux paint. It is believed that the Bearded Collie was among the original breeds used for developing the Old English Sheepdog, and others speculate that the Russian Owtchar is also among the breed’s ancestors. The breed was exported to the United States in the 1880′s and the Old English Sheepdog continues to be a very popular showdog even today.
This breed is exceptionally loving and a known to be very sweet as well. These dogs enjoy being with their family and are wonderful with all ages of children. It is widely known that old English sheepdogs will do anything for their owners, except be aggressive, it simply is not in their nature. These wonderful dogs are sometimes known for trying to herd small children by bumping them gently, they also enjoy relaxing and have sometimes been called “couch potatoes”.
As is to be expected with this breed, old English sheepdogs do require a great deal of grooming. Brushing of the coat should be done at least three times a week to keep their fur free of mats and tangles. When matting does occur, it should be tended too immediately to prevent skin problems. These dogs do enjoy exercise and are happiest being allowed to run off the leash or to play in the house. Training is also essential for this breed as they are intelligent and have a stubborn streak, as a result training needs to be consistent and with a firm hand.
These dogs are large and shaggy, and while they can do well in apartment living old English sheepdogs do prefer having a yard to play in. These dogs are enthusiastic and energetic and do make sensible watchdogs due to their large size and propensity to bark an alarm. These dogs enjoy being with their family and if left alone for too long during the day can experience separation anxiety which could lead to excessive barking and mischievous behavior. Some famous Old English Sheepdogs include “Martha”, who belonged to Paul McCartney as well as “Tiny”, who belonged to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and there have been English sheepdogs in Disney films, most notably “101 Dalmations” and “The Little Mermaid”.
